Clean Power Alliances approves construction of 100 MW battery project

Clean Power Alliance approved April 2 a new Energy Storage Agreement that will result in the construction of a 100 MW battery storage project in California, one of the largest in the state.

The 15-year agreement for the Luna Storage facility will allow CPA to increase the reliability of their power service to their Southern California customers.

The 400 MWh standalone lithium-ion battery storage project is valued at more than $100 million and will be owned and operated by sPower.

“Clean Power Alliance is excited to be advancing our clean energy goals during this difficult time,” Ted Bardacke, executive director at Clean Power Alliance, said in a statement. “By fast-tracking projects like Luna Storage, we are fighting climate change while investing in our community and creating jobs right when they are needed the most.”

The contract is a direct result of a requirement established by the California Utilities Commission in 2019 that CPA procure at least 98.4 MW of new capacity by 2021. The CPUC also established similar requirements for 2022 and 2023, which will be fulfilled by future agreements that are currently under negotiation.

The project will be built in the City of Lancaster in LA County and should be operational by August 2021.
