Xylem cuts emissions intensity 28.3%, surpassing goal

Xylem Inc. announced June 8 that they reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 28.3% by 2019, surpassing their target of a 20% reduction established in 2014.

Going forward, the water technology company is pursuing a new target of using 100% renewable energy in their major facilities by 2025. The company also set a goal to develop a science-based target for Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

To achieve their energy consumption reduction goals, Xylem implemented projects that got employees involved to identify ways to improve day-to-day energy efficiency, which resulted in low- to no-cost improvements like installation efficiency lighting and mechanical systems, ovens, motors, belts and drives, fans and pumps, refrigeration systems and office equipment. Twenty Xylem facilities underwent these programs of self-identifying opportunities for reducing energy use.

Out of 62 recommended Eco Projects, Xylem pursued 32 and consequently diverted 406 tons of carbon emissions, which equates to 601,000 kWh of saved energy. Additionally, the company expects to save around 5 million kWh and 250 tons of carbon emissions per year after installing LED lighting, improving compressed air efficiencies and automating equipment to turn off after afters.

“With water and resource management at the core of our business, Xylem is deeply committed to sustainability,” President and CEO Patrick Decker said in a statement. “It is fundamental to who we are and what we do. We feel both privileged and proud to be making progress, alongside our customers and partners, and making a difference for our stakeholders, globally. Now, as part of our mission to solve the world’s toughest water and resource challenges -- making the world more sustainable for everyone -- we’re committing ourselves to doing even more.”
