Lyft pledges an 100% EV driver fleet by 2030

Lyft announced June 17 a groundbreaking commitment in partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund to have 100% electric vehicles in their fleet of drivers by 2030.

The rideshare platform plans to work with their drivers to transition to electric vehicles in order to help mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the transportation sector, the largest source of pollution in the United States. They hope to avoid tens of millions of tons of greenhouse gas emission and reduce gasoline consumption by more than a billion gallons over the next decade through this transition.

“Now more than ever, we need to work together to create cleaner, healthier, and more equitable communities,” John Zimmer, co-founder and president of Lyft, said in a statement. “Success breeds success, and if we do this right, it creates a path for others.  If other rideshare and delivery companies, automakers and rental car companies make this shift, it can be the catalyst for transforming transportation as a whole."

The transition will include all vehicles used on the Lyft platform, including all cars in the Express Drive rental car program for rideshare drivers, consumer rental car program for riders, autonomous vehicle program and drivers’ personal cars used on the platform. Last year, Lyft launched hundreds of electric vehicles through the Express Drive program in select cities, which led to progress with policymakers like the introduction of state tax incentives in Colorado for Express Drive rental partners. They have now joined The Climate Group’s EV 100 initiative and plans to work with the Environmental Defense Fund in pursuit of this new target.
