Microsoft, Unilever, Neste join The Climate Pledge

Unilever, Microsoft, Brooks, Neste and ITV, among eight other companies, are the most recent signatories of Amazon’s The Climate Pledge.

The full list of companies that recently joined the pledge to be carbon neutral by 2040 is Atos, Brooks, Canary Wharf Group, Coca-Cola European Partners, ERM, Groupe SEB France, Harbour Air, ITV, Microsoft, Neste, Rubicon, Unilever and Vaude. With their participation, The Climate Pledge now has 31 members.

Members of The Climate Pledge agree to measure and report emissions regularly, implement decarbonization strategies through real business changes and innovations and neutralize any remaining emissions with additional offsets.

Microsoft said it plans to use its participation in the group to collaborate on climate goals with other countries, given its achievement of carbon neutrality in 2012 and promotion of low-carbon business practices.

“No one company or organization can meaningfully address the climate crisis on their own. It will take aggressive approaches, new innovative technologies and strong commitment to collaboration across industries and economic sectors,” Lucas Joppa, Microsoft Chief Environmental Officer, said in a statement. “By joining The Climate Pledge community and working together, we will be able to collectively rise to the challenge and curb our emissions so that we can make progress toward a net zero future.”

Neste is the first major energy company to sign the Pledge, while Unilever is targeting a cut in half of its emissions from products and value chain and to have no emissions from its own operations by 2030. This year, Unilever achieved 100% renewable grid electricity worldwide and is targeting a 100% shift to renewable energy by 2030.
