Estée Lauder plans for net zero emissions for its travel retail locations

The Estée Lauder Companies announced Jan. 26 that it is committed to eliminating the carbon emissions associated with the products sold within its Travel Retail unit, including duty-free environments like airports, downtown locations, airlines, cruises and border shops.

The company estimates that the Travel Retail unit of its business touches over 1 billion customers a year and is one of the company’s highest growth channels. It intends to achieve net zero carbon emissions for transportation of its products and activities related to these products within the Travel Retail network, as well as net zero carbon emissions for all its corporate travel within this business segment by end of fiscal year 2023.

“The Estée Lauder Companies and its brands have made great strides to ensure we continue to be a company rooted in values and it is important that we do our part in Travel Retail to uphold this vision. By implementing sustainability goals for Travel Retail, we are furthering the company’s commitment to the environment and demonstrating to travelers how we are making a positive impact in this space,” Olivier Bottrie, Global President of Travel Retail and Retail Development at The Estée Lauder Companies, said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing the necessary work to lead in this space and sharing our progress with our employees and consumers.”

The Estée Lauder Companies also plans to incorporate sustainability practices into its Travel Retail new store design and visual merchandising across all brands starting in 2021. Since first launching Travel Retail’s sustainability initiatives, the company has incorporated sustainability store design into its newly opened locations such as the new Estée Lauder, La Mer and MAC counters at Hyundai COEX in Seoul, Korea.

By the end of 2023, the Travel Retail unit also plans to deploy sustainability practices across all its office locations.
