DHL expands electric fleet and sets new carbon targets

Deutsche Post DHL Group announced March 22 that it plans to deploy 80,000 electric vehicles for last-mile deliveries, 60% of its fleet, and reduce its emissions by 29 million tons in line with the Paris Agreement by 2030.

The German postal service outlined its new sustainability roadmap and collectively decided on its science based emissions targets. The company plans to invest 7 billion euros into climate-neutrality strategies by 2030, with particular attention being paid to funding alternative aviation fuels, the expansion of its electric vehicle fleet and climate-neutral buildings.

DHL is pursuing a larger goal by being a zero-emissions company by 2050 and this new announcement today reflects a company-wide commitment to accelerating their efforts toward that goal.

"As the world's largest logistics company, it is our responsibility to lead the way and guide the logistics industry into a sustainable future. We are turning our yellow Group into a green company and making an important contribution to our planet and society," Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL Group, said in a statement. "I am convinced that by focusing even more on our ESG goals, we will remain the first choice for customers, employees and investors - and thus lay the foundations for long-term economic success."

DHL first launched its “Strategy 2025” initiative in 2019 to integrate sustainability as a key part of its corporate strategy. Another key focus is supporting the development of renewable engine fuels to mitigate the carbon footprint of its unavoidable long-distance routes such as air transport. Additionally, all its new buildings, including offices, mail and parcel centers and logistics warehouses, will be built climate-neutral going forward.
