Diageo's Emissions Targets Have Been Approved by SBTi

Diageo announced Sept. 9 that its 2030 emissions targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative and meet the criteria for the global effort to stop warming before 1.5°C.

The producer of alcohol brands like Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, and Guinness is targeting net-zero direct operations by 2030 and a 50% reduction in its Scope 3 emissions. Diageo is also hoping to reach its goal of increasing its renewable electricity sourcing from 66% in 2020 to 100% by 2030.

“We are passionate about protecting the future of the planet,” Dr. Kirstie McIntyre, global sustainability director at Diageo, said in a statement. “This demonstrates that our carbon targets are going much further than the required minimum in this critical decade of action to 2030.”

Between 2015 and 2020, Diageo already cut its direct operational emissions by 50%. To reduce its supply chain emissions, the company plans to work directly with suppliers to reduce their emissions.
