SDG&E Updates Path For Reaching Net Zero Emissions by 2045

San Diego Gas & Electric Company announced Oct. 18 its new sustainability goals including operating a zero-emissions fleet by 2025 and achieving net-zero energy facilities by 2030.

The energy company released its annual sustainability strategy update, in which it highlighted its new goals to help the company reach net-zero emissions by 2045. It has accelerated its goal to operate a 100% zero-emissions vehicle fleet and is now targeting 2035, five years ahead of its previous goal, and is seeking to reach zero net energy for all owned facilities in San Diego and Orange County.

SDG&E is also piloting a virtual power plant by 2022, accelerating a previous goal to launch the project by 2025. The project will involve integrating customer-owned distributed energy resources into a planned microgrid to allow for greater energy resiliency across the county.

Over the past year, SDG&E added two energy storage facilities with a combined capacity of 50 MW, three large-scale mobile batteries and will soon finish construction of a rural community microgrid. The company’s Accelerate to Zero Emissions program was also launched to attract public and private investment to expand electric vehicle and fuel cell-powered vehicle infrastructure.

“Over the past year, we spent a lot of time listening to a wide cross section of stakeholders so that we could incorporate their feedback into our long-term strategy to move our region closer to carbon neutrality,” SDG&E CEO Caroline Winn said in a statement. “We recognize we still have much work to do and that we can’t do it alone. Community partners who support and challenge us in our work to develop sustainability solutions are invaluable as we focus on strengthening climate equity and community resilience where we all call home.”
