Mondelēz Identifies Pathway to a Net Zero Value Chain by 2050
Mondelēz International announced Nov. 1 that it is committed to reaching net-zero emissions across its full value chain by 2050, joining the Business Ambition for 1.5°C and the UN’s Race to Zero Campaign.
The food company plans to establish interim emissions targets over the next two years building on previous science-based targets set in 2020. To transform its business in order to incorporate decarbonization strategies, Mondelēz plans to convert its global manufacturing electricity use to renewable energy, replace its thermal fuels with cleaner alternatives and improve the energy efficiency of its biscuit ovens and steam boilers.
Within the logistics arm of the company’s operations, Mondelēz will invest in electric and hydrogen trucks, convert its owned and third-party warehouses to renewable energy and improve the efficiency of its distribution networks by optimizing routes and improving truck and container use.
“While we've already made significant progress, the road to net zero will require further transformation of our business as well as global collaboration across industries, sectors and landscapes,” Chris McGrath, VP and chief of Global Impact & Sustainability, said in a statement. “We will remain focused on leveraging proven models and available solutions, while at the same time using our scale and influence to help drive technical advancement, public-private collaboration and investment to incubate innovation.”
In 2020, the company made broad strides toward its energy goals and reduced emissions from its manufacturing by 24%, exceeding its target of 15%.
