Boise, Idaho Plans to Increase Geothermal Heating

City officials in Boise, Idaho said they want to increase geothermal heating by 40% to become carbon neutral by 2050.

Geothermal heat currently provides 2% of the city’s energy, city officials said, according to an article by the Associated Press.

Boise currently pumps 250 gallons of geothermal water that is 177 degrees Fahrenheit to 96 buildings.

The city’s goal is to increase the use of geothermal water by 5 million gallons each year for a maximum of 355 million gallons.

The city’s residents have used geothermal heat for at least 130 years through its four networks. There are also private systems, one that the state owns and another one that is run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
