Chicago recently completed an overhaul of its city streetlights and converted 200,000 lights to LED, a move that is expected to reduce city electrical costs by $100 million during the first 10 years.

The Chicago Department of Transportation is aiming to install 270,000 LED streetlights in the city by 2021.

“Today marks a major milestone towards delivering safer, cleaner, more efficient, and more affordable lighting for Chicago’s residents and businesses, all while creating good, well-paying jobs across our city and saving our taxpayers millions of dollars,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement.

More LED installations should be happening in the city’s North and South sides later this year. Additionally, the Chicago DOT announced plans for a citywide lighting management system that will allow better detection of power outages.
