Choice Hotels International, a lodging franchisor, reported its Scope 3 GHG emissions for the first time, alongside Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

As detailed in its 2024 Sustainability Report, the company calculated its full GHG inventory as an important step toward fulfilling its commitment to set science-based targets.

Choice announced that emissions from franchised hotel operations represent the largest share of Scope 3 emissions, accounting for approximately 95% of total Scope 3 emissions. This category includes emissions from franchisee energy consumption, which is not covered under Scope 1 or Scope 2 and is reported by franchisors.

Since 2022, Choice began to roll out an automated property-level utilities tracking dashboard powered by Schneider Electric. This initiative is a critical step towards helping franchisees identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements and enabling the company to understand its Scope 3 emissions inventory.

“At Choice Hotels, we are dedicated to building a better tomorrow, today, by integrating sustainable practices across our business,” said Megan Brumagim, Vice President, Upscale Brands and Chief Sustainability Officer for Choice Hotels International, in a statement. “Our 2024 Sustainability Report highlights our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and driving long-term value for hotel owners. We are proud of the progress we’ve made and remain energized to continue our journey towards a more sustainable tomorrow.”
