DaVita, a kidney health care provider, announced that 100% of the company’s global operations are on track to be matched by renewable energy purchases by 2025 via virtual power purchase agreements, including two new agreements in Europe.
The company also converted two existing centers to all-electric, demonstrating the feasibility of building electrification as part of a net-zero roadmap.
DaVita has been focused on energy efficiency improvements for over a decade. These include efficient LED lighting systems and smart building controls, as well as upgrading water heaters and HVAC units to high-efficiency systems. The majority of the company’s U.S. locations now utilize these energy-efficient features.
In 2023, the company announced the launch of its first ever net-zero dialysis center, featuring all electric systems and solar power. In 2024, DaVita launched five pilot projects upgrading AC units and/or water heaters from natural gas to electricity.
According to its Community Care report, through its energy efficiency initiatives and clean energy investments, DaVita has achieved a 72% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions as of December 31, 2024, compared to a 2018 baseline.
A review by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) verifies the company’s climate targets are in line with the scale of reductions required to keep global warming from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels.
“This year, we’re celebrating 25 years of patient care and progress made toward improving the health and vibrancy of the communities and people we serve,” said CEO Javier Rodriguez in a statement. “As we look ahead, I’m excited to build upon these community health achievements with our unmatched passion for enhancing and shaping the care experience for people around the world.”
