PepsiCo announced it extended its climate, packaging, agriculture and water goals to 2050.
The food and beverage company updated its Scope 1, 2 and 3 targets and aligned them to a 1.5°C trajectory by 2050, reflecting SBTi sectoral guidance on Forests, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG) and Energy and Industry (E&I) emissions.
The company now seeks to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. PepsiCo’s revised climate goals, validated by SBTi, were shaped by its own learnings and the latest science. Its previous Scope 3 target was aligned to well-below 2°C by 2030, and its net zero ambition was aligned to 2040.
As detailed in the company’s new Climate Transition Plan, PepsiCo changed its goal to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 on a 2022 basis compared to the previous goal of a 75% reduction by 2030 on a 2015 basis.
The company also changed its interim Scope 3 targets from reducing Energy & Industry (E&I) emissions by 42% by 2030 compared to a previous goal of a 40% reduction.
PepsiCo now seeks to lower its Forests, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG) by 30% by 2030 on a 2022 basis compared to the prior goal of 42% on a 2015 basis.
The company did not change its goal to achieve 100% renewable electricity in company-owned operations by 2030. This goal is being accomplished using a diversified portfolio of solutions, including renewable energy certificates.
“As circumstances evolve, PepsiCo continually adapts how we source ingredients; make, move, and sell our products; and inspire people through our brands,” said PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta in a statement. “This journey is underpinned by pep+, which is an investment in building a stronger and more resilient business — today and in the future — and guides our actions to help create a more resilient, more sustainable food system. Our goals must evolve with us to keep our ambition and to deliver on our long-term vision.”
