Primo Brands, a North American branded beverage company, plans to set goals this year to reduce its emissions.
The company is currently integrating the infrastructures of two legacy companies and will set emissions reduction goals in Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by the end of 2025.
Primo Brands is focusing on energy efficiency and equipment upgrades that will help deliver energy savings and is also considering the possibilities of more onsite renewable electricity generation, building on the successful installation of a solar array at its Hollis, Maine, factory.
In 2023, legacy Primo Water achieved its target of an absolute carbon reduction by 25% in three years. In 2024, Scope 1 and 2 market-based emissions were 159,875 metric tons CO2e. Legacy Primo Water volume increased, resulting in additional on-road miles. Growth in the Mountain Valley business contributed additional on-road miles, as well as Scope 1 emissions.
In 2024, legacy BlueTriton Brands saw increased demand and production but slightly lower Scope 1 and 2 market-based emissions compared to 2023. The company implemented measures to curb emissions, including LED lighting upgrades, installation of high-efficiency equipment, and machinery optimization. Total Scope 1 and 2 emissions were 314,715 metric tons CO2e, which represents a reduction of 1.4% against a 2022 baseline.
Primo Brands seeks to set Scope 1 and 2 energy intensity goals for its factories in 2025, execute identified opportunities from 2024 energy audit in top eight factories by 2026, save 10 million miles in 2025 through route optimization, increase the percentage of trucks in fleet powered by alternative fuels and reduce Scope 3 packaging emissions through recycled content and reuse. The goal is to further increase energy efficiency since 37% of its total fleet runs on propane, which produces fewer GHG emissions than diesel fuel.
Details were released in the company’s inaugural 2024 Sustainability Report, which was developed using the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Index’s non-alcoholic beverage industry standards.
“We are proud to launch our inaugural sustainability report as a unified organization,” said Robbert Rietbroek, CEO of Primo Brands, in a statement. “This report reflects our go-forward strategy to meet the healthy hydration needs of millions while advancing water and environmental stewardship, circular packaging solutions, and community-focused initiatives. It’s an important milestone in our journey as we continue to deliver healthy hydration sustainably and to create value for our communities, customers, and the planet.”
