Southwest Wisconsin Technical College announced the completion of a new solar array and battery energy storage system (BESS) on its campus.
The $1.6 million project — installed by energy solutions provider Ameresco, Inc. — includes a 300-kilowatt solar array and a 125-kilowatt BESS designed to offset approximately 60% of the electricity used in Building 400. The building is one of the college’s most active facilities during the summer months, according to a statement.
The project is expected to reduce utility costs by approximately $30,000 per year and provide critical backup power to the Student Services building in the event of an outage.
This is the first solar and storage system of its kind on the campus and will serve as a hands-on learning opportunity for students and apprentices interested in careers in renewable energy and sustainability.
Southwest Wisconsin Technical College is part of the Wisconsin Technical College System, which offers over 500 programs awarding two-year associate degrees, one- and two-year technical diplomas, short-term technical diplomas and certificates.
