UGG recently announced the launch of its Plant Power Collection of footwear, made with carbon-neutral, plant-based materials to reduce the carbon emissions in its supply chain.Â
The new collection is one aspect of the execution of the California footwear company’s FEEL GOOD sustainability platform, which was launched in October. UGG is targeting increasing its use of recycled, plant-based and renewable (bio-based) fibers by 35% by 2027.
The key element of the shoe design is the SugarSole farm outsole, derived from renewable sugarcane made with rainwater-based practices rather than CO2-based irrigation.
“At UGG, we are committed to doing our part to combat climate change,” Andrea O’Donnell, president of UGG & Koolaburra by UGG of Deckers Brands, said in a statement. “Our design team took inspiration from our iconic styles and created new silhouettes made from carbon-neutral, plant-based materials. The resulting Plant Power Collection tells a story about what is possible, and it is an exciting step in on our journey towards a more sustainable future.”
Additionally, the fluff used in the construction of the shoes is made with plant-based TENCEL lyocell fibers. The fibers are made from wood pulp from sustainably managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).
