Whirlpool to install 4 new wind turbines at Ohio manufacturing plants
Expanding its onsite wind portfolio, Whirlpool Corp. plans to spend $13.5 million on four new wind turbines that will help power its Marion and Ottawa manufacturing plants in Ohio.
The three turbines at the Marion facility are expected to offset Whirlpool's total electric consumption by 19%, eliminating the equivalent of more than 9,000 tons of CO2, the company said in a May 26 news release. Those turbines are expected to be completed in early 2017.
Ottawa's turbine is expected to offset the plant's electrical consumption by 34%; that one is expected to be finished by the end of 2016.
All of the turbines will be built and financed by One Energy as part of its "Wind for Industry" project. Whirlpool is using the same Goldwind 1.5-MW turbines it used for its previous, 3-MW wind farm project in Findlay, Ohio, which came online in January.
"Whirlpool Corporation is proud to be a global leader in sustainable on-site energy generation for manufacturing, and this project is the latest to demonstrate our commitment to sustainable and renewable solutions," Ron Voglewede, the company's global sustainability director, said in the news release. "In addition to lowering our operational footprint and costs, we are continuing to optimize and innovate the appliances that are being built in Marion and Ottawa to lower energy and water consumption to help our consumers reduce their environmental footprints, while improving performance."
