Target signs PPA with Kansas wind farm
Target Corp. recently signed a long-term power purchase agreement to buy 100 MW of power from a wind project in Kansas that is expected to be operational by the end of 2018.
The 474 MW Solomon Forks wind farm will supply power to the retail giant following its agreement with the developer of the project, Infinity Wind, according to a report from Recharge News. This is Target’s second wind PPA, the first of which was signed in July 2016 with Starwood Energy Group for 40 MW from a 211-MW farm in Texas.
The agreement continues Target’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy portfolio and reducing its carbon emissions. Its recently released sustainability report said the company completed solar installations at 157 of its locations in 2016, bringing its total to 350 across all its locations. The chain committed to reaching 500 solar installations by 2020.
Recharge News reported that the PPA for the Solomon Forks wind farm will supply 100% of the energy needed to power 150 Target stores in the area. Renewable Choice Energy, part of Schneider Electric, said in an Aug. 8 announcement that it worked with the retail giant to identify and evaluate options and arrange the deal.
