Digital Realty signs PPAs for data centers

Digital Realty will be adding 227,000 MWh of clean energy to power its data centers through two energy deals signed with projects in Oregon and Northern Virginia.

The data center provider signed a PPA with ENGIE North America to supply its Northern Virginia data centers with 107,000 MWh of solar power annually from a 50-MW project expected to come online in late 2020.

The second agreement was a green tariff agreement with Portland General Electric to supply 120,000 MWh annually to its data center development project in Hillsboro, Ore., under the utility’s Green Future Impact program. Through the program, PGE works with large customers to source solar or wind generation in Oregon under long-term contracts and then retires the RECs generated on behalf of each customer.

As of the recent clean energy agreements, Digital Realty sources 100% renewable energy for its EMEA portfolio, 100% wind power for its U.S. colocation business unit and supplies 100% clean energy to several Northern California properties.

“We place a high priority on sourcing net-new renewable energy as we expand our portfolio, and each market has its own unique pathway to identifying and realizing impactful and cost-effective renewable solutions," Aaron Binkley, Senior Director of Sustainability at Digital Realty, said in a statement
