Google to combine solar and storage for new Nev. data center

Google has entered into an agreement to power its new $600 million data center in Henderson, Nev., with a hybrid system combining 350 MW of solar energy capacity with up to 280 MW of battery storage.

The tech giant claims it is the world’s largest battery-backed solar deal for a corporate customer. The solar/storage system is expected to begin operation in the second half of 2023, according to a report by S&P Global.

The energy systems will be implemented just outside of Las Vegas by NV Energy, who will also continue to supply natural gas for generating facilities supplying the remaining power to Google’s data center. The contract also allows NV Energy to use solar power not consumed by the data center, while crediting Google’s bill for that amount, according to S&P Global. The solar and storage capacity would mostly be used by NV Energy during peak capacity in summer.

The announcement of this project follows a move by Google in September 2019 to sign 18 new energy deals, including the acquisition of a total of 1,600 MW of renewable energy.
