City of Glendale signs on for 12.5% of solar and storage project

The City of Glendale, Calif., will be sourcing 25 MW of solar energy and up to 50 MWh of battery storage through a 25-year agreement to be provided energy from the new Eland 1 Solar and Storage Center in Kern County.

The agreement, made with Southern California Public Power Authority, grants the city a 12.5% share of the solar energy, battery energy and associated environmental attributes of the facility, which will increase the amount of energy they receive as the facility increases its generation capacity.

The Southern California Public Power Authority consists of 10 municipal utilities and one irrigation district. The City of Los Angeles is a part of the joint energy investment and the LA Department of Water and Power will manage the project development with 8minute Solar Energy.

“We are proud that Glendale is part of a project that supports union jobs, is extremely cost effective, and increases the amount of solar energy used to power our city,” the Glendale Environmental Coalition wrote in a statement to ColoradoBoulevard.net. “We are heartened by the positive collaboration between the City of Los Angeles and the City of Glendale and commend our city leaders for working together towards our mutually shared and mutually challenging goals. This is the type of collaboration it is going to take for all of us to meet the 100% carbon-free by 2045 goals of California’s state mandates.”
