Ball Corporation to cover 63% of EU energy use with new VPPAs

Ball Corporation announced July 21 two new VPPAs with wind projects in Europe that will provide 93.4 MW of energy to cover approximately 63% of their electricity load in their European aluminum beverage packaging plants.

The Corral Nuevo (wpd) and Brattmyrliden (Falck Renewables) projects will provide 308,000 MWh annually to the company and help Ball Corporation with their goal of sourcing 100% renewable electricity. The wind projects will also enable Ball to reduce their Scope 2 emissions generated in Europe by approximately 60% compared to 2019 and are expected to come online in 2021.

"These milestone renewable energy deals in Europe affirm Ball's steadfast commitment to reduce absolute carbon emissions within our operations and through our value chain," Kathleen Pitre, chief commercial and sustainability officer, said in a statement. "Both projects will allow us to address a substantial portion of our European electricity use with new wind energy and accelerate progress toward our recently approved science-based targets."

Ball has also purchased Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) to fully cover their operations in the European Union, Serbia and the U.K. through 2020 where PPAs could not be conducted. The company also aims to reduce absolute carbon emissions in their global operations by 55% and within their value chain by 16% between 2017 and 2030.
