ExxonMobil purchases 2.5 million barrels of renewable diesel
ExxonMobil announced Aug. 11 that they have signed an agreement to purchase 2.5 million barrels of renewable diesel for five years starting in 2022.
The energy company will source the renewable diesel from a converted California refinery in Bakersfield, Calif., that was acquired by Global Clean Energy. ExxonMobil plans to distribute the renewable diesel, made from non-petroleum feedstocks like camelina, cooking oil, soybean oil and distillers’ corn oil, within California and possibly beyond when production starts in 2022.
Analysis of California Air Resources Board data suggests that such non-petroleum feedstocks can produce life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions of nearly 40 to 80% compared to petroleum-based diesel.
“Our agreement with Global Clean Energy builds on ExxonMobil’s longstanding efforts to develop and offer products that help meet society’s energy needs while reducing environmental impacts,” Bryan Milton, president of ExxonMobil Fuels and Lubricants Company, said in a statement. “Chemically similar to petroleum-based diesel, renewable diesel can be readily blended for use in engines on the market today.”
