Best Buy Plans Massive Solar Farm to Cover 30% of its Stores Electricity

Best Buy announced Oct. 13 that it will soon offset the carbon impact of 30% of its U.S. store portfolio through a new utility-scale solar project.

The Prospero 2 Best Buy Solar project was created in partnership with U.S. Bank and Longroad Energy and represents the largest renewable energy project that the retailer has been involved with to date. The solar farm will cover the electricity needs of 300 Best Buy stores for 10 years and support the company’s goal to be carbon neutral by 2040.

“We are committed to taking action to be carbon neutral across our business by 2040,” Tim Dunn, Best Buy’s head of environmental sustainability, said in a statement. “We are proud to be making another investment in renewable energy that accelerates our sustainability goals and addresses climate change in our operations and the communities we serve.”

Best Buy has reduced its carbon emissions 61% since 2009, significantly through investments in various solar energy projects. The company signed the Climate Pledge in 2020 and plans to reach its carbon neutral goal in 2040, ten years earlier than originally planned.
