Shell and EDF Partner to Bring Offshore Wind to New Jersey Power Grid

New Jersey residents will soon be receiving energy produced by offshore wind farms operated by a joint venture between EDF Renewables North America and Shell New Energies US.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities granted the joint venture, titled Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, the rights to provide 1.5 GW of renewable energy to the state. Atlantic Shores plans to develop and operate the wind farm in a lease area 10 to 20 miles off the coast of New Jersey.

The new venture will help Shell on its pathway to becoming net-zero by 2050. Additionally, it will help the State of New Jersey reach its goal of sourcing 35% of energy from renewable sources by 2025 and 50% by 2030.

“This win by Atlantic Shores progresses Shell's investment in renewable power and the communities we serve,” James Cotter, GM of US Offshore Wind, said in a statement. “Shell remains confident about the future of offshore wind and this latest achievement will help us deliver on our low carbon ambitions and help to provide more of the clean power options that the world needs.”
