GW University saves 18 million kWh with LED retrofits

George Washington University has been able to save 18 million kWh of energy over the past four years just by switching to efficient LED light bulbs.

The D.C.-based campus first installed LED lights at their Amsterdam Hall four years ago. Currently, more than half of their 24 residence halls are completely outfitted with LED lights, the university’s student newspaper, the GW Hatchet, reported. Additionally, a majority of their academic buildings have also received LED retrofits.

The university wouldn’t disclose how much money they have saved through the program but mentioned that their savings are enhanced by rebates from the D.C. Sustainable Energy Utility.

“From a GW perspective, these energy savings are enough to power District House since construction, with enough remaining to power Amsterdam Hall the past four years,” University Spokeswoman Crystal Nosal told the publication. “Typical LED lighting upgrade projects produce a payback within several years.”
