Ford offers largest EV charging network, increased connectivity software

Ford announced Oct. 17 a new program that will make the integration of an electric vehicle lifestyle more easily accessible to its future customers, including the introduction of more public charging stations in North America.

The newly released FordPass Charging Network includes more than 12,000 charging stations with more than 35,000 plugs. New customers will receive two years of complimentary access to the network. The network will soon also feature access to DC fast chargers, a 150 kW charger estimated to add 47 miles of range in 10 minutes.

Customers will be able to locate charging stations in the area using the new FordPass app and the in-vehicle screen. Ford’s all-electric vehicle charging strategy also features comprehensive at-home charging options in addition to its network of public stations, which is the largest in the country.

Moving forward, all Ford electric vehicles will come standard with a Ford Mobile Charger, capable of charging on a higher-voltage 240-volt electrical outlet often used for large household appliances. This charging mechanism will add an estimated range of 22 miles per charging hour. If using a standard 120-volt electrical outlet, the range of charging will be three miles per charging hour.

Customers will also have the option of installing a Ford Connected Charge Station, which offers connectivity features and a higher power-48-amp charger that enables full control from anywhere. One full night of charging could completely power a vehicle, with an estimated range of 32 miles per charging hour. These stations will be installed in-home in partnership with Amazon Home Services.

“Among people who already own or want to purchase electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, 48 percent say that a lack of charging stations is one of their main concerns,” Ted Cannis, Ford director of global electrification, said in a statement. “By offering industry-leading charging access we are dismantling those barriers, allowing more customers to confidently enjoy the benefits of owning an electric vehicle.”

To increase the ease of use for new Ford electric vehicles, customers will be able to stay connected to their vehicles through the FordPass app, which offers features like setting charging schedules and alerts and pre-conditioning their car before they enter it.
