ADM paves way to reduce emissions 25%, energy intensity 15%
Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) released March 31 a plan to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25% and energy intensity by 15% before 2035.
The agricultural processor and ingredient provider established energy use improvement targets back in 2011, and after achieving those goals employed WSP Global to conduct an in-depth feasibility study to identify opportunities to a new set of commitments. In this report, WSP identified opportunities to reduce emissions by purchasing renewable electricity, increasing the use of biomass fuels, electrifying their fleet and upgrading equipment at various locations.
WSP identified that ADM has the opportunity to install on-site solar, wind, nuclear and battery storage and that to meet the demand of one of their larger processing facilities, six square miles of solar panels or over 200 utility-scale wind turbines would need to be installed.
ADM also has the availability to generate thermal energy on-site by burning purchased fuels, in addition to on-site production of biogas, solid biomass waste and geothermal. However, these options were also determined to be costly and lacking adequate resources. The study explores options for ADM to purchase fuels including biomass, biogas, biofuels, renewable natural gas and hydrogen.
In an additional identified opportunity, WSP determined that carbon sequestration is a viable option for the company. The ADM Decatur facility currently has underground carbon capture and sequestration capability, and it is believed that this could potentially be expanded to other ADM facilities.
