GM ramps up electric vehicle production, targeting sustainability goals

General Motors is on track to allocate more than $20 billion to electric and autonomous vehicle programs between 2020 and 2025 and is continuing their campaign to increase their electric vehicle models available to match any auto shopper need.

The auto manufacturer released their 10th annual Sustainability Report, in which they outlined their goals to increase the zero-emission vehicle they put on the road. Their current goals include continuing to recycle 100% of end-of-life EV batteries and establishing a sustainable material target of at least 50% by 2030 for all vehicles.

“The past several months have been difficult and our world has changed. As we move through the world in a new way, GM is as determined as ever to create solutions that lead to a better future for all,” CEO Mary Barra said in a statement. “GM remains focused on delivering on our vision of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion, while becoming the most inclusive company in the world.”

While a majority of GM’s emissions come from the use of their vehicles, under Scope 3 emissions, they set a goal to reduce manufacturing carbon intensity by 20% between 2010 and 2020. When they achieved that goal three years early, in 2017, the company developed a new Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction target: 31% by 2030 against a 2010 baseline. 

GM was also previously committed to sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2050. In 2019, they reached 24% of that goal through renewable energy contracts and in early 2020 they increased their goal with a target to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2040 with interim goals of achieving 60% globally by 2025 and 100% of U.S. sites by 2030. They expect their largest facility in North America, Spring Hill Manufacturing, to be powered by 100% solar energy by late 2022 through a green tariff agreement with Tennessee Valley Authority for 100 MW per year.
