Honda, GM lead blockchain standard for EV integration

Honda and General Motors are leading the Electric Vehicle Grid Integration (EVGI) Working Group developed by the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) to create the industry’s first global standard incorporating blockchain technology that could lay the foundation for a worldwide decentralized vehicle charging network.

The primary purpose of the group is to establish a set of core network data services that will provide value to EV owners, charging infrastructure and grid operators. MOBI’s EVGI Working Group, led by Honda and GM, includes support from Accenture, CPChain, IBM, the IOTA Foundation, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Politecnico di Torino and R3.

The group’s first technical design specification covers system design and data schemas for three core use case areas: Vehicle to Grid Integration, Tokenized Carbon Credits and Peer to Peer applications. The EVGI Standard ensures that pertinent data attributes and functionalities are available for organizations to use in their own applications.

"Today's energy markets are undergoing a massive transition from centralized power generation in big power plants, towards more distributed and volatile power generation. Decentralization and the concept of direct P2P interaction is set to become a key factor in leveraging this new market and building meaningful tools for energy-conscious end customers,” Christian Köbel, Senior Project Engineer at Honda R&D Europe, said in a statement. The goal is to enable scalable, user-centric energy communities. The EVGI Standard represents one of the first essential building blocks for founding such an ecosystem.”

The EVGI Standard is also being reviewed by formal verification experts to ensure developers that the best practices in cybersecurity are being used in the development of such a network. Developers hope that the standard will ultimately pave the way for lowering carbon emissions and reducing traffic congestion.
