Uber, JetBlue, and other transportation leaders join The Climate Pledge

Uber, JetBlue, Boom Supersonic, Rivian and Cabify announced Dec. 2 that they are the newest signatories of Amazon’s The Climate Pledge representing a growing commitment within the transportation sector to transitioning to a green economy.

The five transportation companies, with signing the pledge, have agreed to measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis and implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement. All are committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

This makes JetBlue the first airline to join the Pledge, following its success in achieving carbon neutrality for all domestic flights back in July 2020.

“Air travel connects people and cultures, and supports a global economy. Our commitment to sustainability has become even more important as we prepare our business for a new climate reality,” JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said in a statement. “We are proud to join The Climate Pledge and join a community of like-minded organizations dedicated to reaching net zero-carbon by 2040. The climate crisis remains one of the biggest threats facing our industry. Our planet is physically changing, as are the expectations of our customers, crewmembers, and investors. Now is the time to rebuild operations in more sustainable ways, such as adopting sustainable aviation fuel and setting clear strategies to reduce net aviation CO2 emissions.”

Uber is currently pursuing transitioning 100% of its fleet to zero-emissions vehicles and previously announced its commitment to reaching net zero emissions in its corporate operations by 2030. Cabify also became the first mobility app in Europe and Latin America to be carbon neutral and offsets 100% of emissions from both corporate operations and from every ride booked on the app. Meanwhile, Boom is in the process of testing sustainable aviation fuels and is exploring to make its aircrafts net zero.

With five four new companies, The Climate Pledge now has 18 signatories. Those who are committed to The Climate Pledge have agreed to focus on deploying renewable energy, investing in sustainable buildings and mobilizing their supply chain to eliminate emissions.
