Brooks Running Releases Plan for Net-Zero Operations by 2040
Brooks Running announced June 29 that it intends to be net-zero by 2040 through a series of emissions reduction strategies validated by the Science Based Target initiative.
A few of the initiatives the sportswear brand plans on implementing to achieve this goal include converting factories to renewable electricity, converting textile tarns to low impact dyeing processes and releasing its first carbon-neutral product, the Ghost 14 running shoe. Brooks will be purchasing carbon credits from projects around the world that avoid or reduce emissions from entering the atmosphere to offset all emissions associated with the new product, as well as additional emissions from its operations.
“We believe that the run can change everything: your day, your life and even the world. But to make those benefits available to all, we need to participate on a global scale,” David Kemp, senior manager of corporate responsibility, said in a statement. “We’ve charted our program to support United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and joined The Climate Pledge, because partnerships will be critical to achieving our ambitious goals.”
Brooks plans to reduce its usage of non-renewable resources by laying the groundwork for a fully circular shoe by 2022 and moving to 100% recycled polyester in its footwear and new apparel materials by 2025.
