Cognizant Outlines Net Zero Strategy

Cognizant announced Oct. 19 its target to reach net-zero emissions by 2030, with interim targets of reducing emissions 50% in its operations and supply chain by 2030 and 90% by 2040.

The professional services company plans to offset remaining emissions after reducing operational and supply chain emissions globally with carbon offsets. The company is also developing a science-based emissions target and plans to submit it for verification by the Science Based Targets initiative.

In order to reduce operational emissions, Cognizant plans to expand its use of onsite solar energy and increase new PPAs with external projects. The company is a member of the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance and already powers over a quarter of its energy use in India with renewable energy.

To further reduce emissions, Cognizant will deploy new energy-efficient equipment at its globally-owned offices and data centers, such as replacing power supply systems, upgrading lighting to LED and retrofitting cooling systems. The company will then help its clients reduce their own emissions through technology like AI, data and analytics, cloud and IoT.

“Climate change is widespread, rapid and intensifying,” CEO Brian Humphries said in a statement. “As a global company, we take seriously our responsibility to leverage our expertise and resources to help address climate change. I am proud to announce that Cognizant commits to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. We will also extend our expertise in cloud, IoT and AI to help our Global 2000 clients meet their sustainability goals, reduce their carbon footprints and sharpen their competitiveness.”
