Chipotle Releases Science-Based Targets for 2030

Chipotle Mexican Grill announced Nov. 4 that it is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 50% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels.

These science-based targets were approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. The restaurant chain plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions through strategies that include implementing smart Energy Management Systems at its restaurants and purchasing renewable energy alongside more efficient restaurant equipment.

To reduce emissions from the transportation and warehousing of ingredients, Chipotle will leverage partnerships and new technology to optimize energy use in both areas of the business.

Chipotle announced earlier this year that it will begin to tie annual executive compensation to ESG goals. It also identified and shared its Scope 3 emissions, fulfilling a goal originally set for 2025.

“We are passionate about Cultivating a Better World and as a company with nearly 3,000 restaurants and approximately 95,000 employees, we have a responsibility to drive meaningful change,” Laurie Schalow, chief corporate affairs and food safety officer, said in a statement. “We are committed to continuous improvement and will actively do our part to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and protect the planet.”
