Rolls-Royce and Etihad Airways Partner on Aviation Decarbonization

Rolls-Royce and Etihad Airways announced Nov. 14 a new agreement focused on increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and the electrification of the aviation sector.

The two companies will collaborate with industry partners on the testing and application of new technologies in electric and hybrid aviation systems in the hopes of developing a solution that can be implemented in Etihad’s new fleet of A350 airplanes.

“Today’s agreement builds on our long history with Rolls-Royce and formalises our cooperation for decarbonisation, as we research, develop and test sustainable solutions to move the industry forward toward net zero,” Tony Douglas, group chief executive officer of Etihad Aviation Group, said in a statement. “There is no quick fix to overcome the challenge of aviation sustainability, it is going to take a united effort if we are to reach our shared goals of drastically reducing the carbon emissions of air travel.”

The initiative extends Rolls-Royce’s Pathway to Net Zero strategy, which includes a company goal to reach net-zero operational emissions by 2030 and net-zero value chain (including product use) by 2050.
