Atkore Unveils 2025 GHG Emissions Ambitions
Atkore announced Jan. 31 with the release of its 2021 Sustainability Report that it is targeting a 10% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity by 2025 compared to 2020 levels.
The electrical infrastructure provider sees its biggest source of Scope 1 and 2 emissions in its use of grid electricity for its industrial plants. The company plans to increase its use of renewable energy and install onsite rooftop solar to account for this demand in order to complete its emissions goals.
In 2021, the company submitted 22 of its sites to participate in the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry, in which each site implemented initiatives to reduce operational energy intensity. These items included implementing energy management software and electrochemical motor lubrication systems, DC motor conversions and monitoring, and efficient upgrades to compressed air systems, chillers, and cooling towers.
In one such example, Atkore upgraded two compressors at its Santa Paula, Calif., site and in the first quarter of FY 2021 saw a 40% reduction in electricity use at the site.
Other efficiency initiatives that contribute toward a reduction in emissions intensity include LEED certification for its largest manufacturing facility and the installation of solar panels and EV charging stations.
