Minnesota Hub Launches Coalition to Scale SAF

A coalition in Minnesota launched to scale the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to help commercial aviation reach net zero by 2050.

Through the GREATER MSP Partnership, companies such as Bank of America, Delta Air Lines, Ecolab and Xcel Energy established the Minnesota SAF Hub, which is a large-scale SAF hub seeking to decarbonize the airline industry.

The Minnesota SAF Hub will accelerate commercial scaling of SAF as Delta seeks to use SAF for more than 10% of its fuel at Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP) International Airport by 2027, with a goal of 50% by 2035.

“The Minnesota SAF Hub is the game changer aviation needs to start producing SAF at the volumes required to meet our aggressive goals,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian in a statement. “This coalition of heavy hitters from across the SAF ecosystem are collaborating to rapidly scale production, demonstrating the power of partnerships to meet our shared goal faster than any of us could do on our own.”

The coalition plans to bring SAF to MSP from out of state by 2025, engage SAF producers and expand the coalition.

The group will also begin SAF production in Minnesota, seek to reduce the carbon intensity of SAF by incorporating carbon capture and regenerative agricultural practices and crops, and will leverage a flexible and data-driven approach as SAF technology and research matures.
