Clario Reports Emissions Reductions

Clario, a healthcare research technology company that delivers endpoint technology solutions for clinical trials, reduced emissions by 47% (externally validated) from purchased electricity by increasing the usage of renewable energy sources.

The company also lowered Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% and plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.

The company set up Science Based Targets (SBTi) in 2023, aiming to join SBTi in 2024, in order to provide
a clearly-defined pathway to lower its GHG emissions.

Most of Clario’s emissions are related to gray electricity (86% of Scope 1 and 2 emissions), with Estenfeld, Lyon, Hamburg, and Brussels utilizing green electricity (14% of Scope 1 and 2 emissions).

The St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Estenfeld offices account for 65% of the total Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Since the St. Louis site also had the highest emissions in relative terms (per FTE) due to its high energy consumption, Clario reduced its office footprint in St. Louis by opting for a smaller, more efficient building. This change, plus the consolidation of two other offices, resulted in a 47% reduction in Scope 2 emissions.

Clario’s Scope 3 GHG emissions account for 95.8% of its emissions where two main sources fall under this scope: transportation and distribution (44%) and purchased goods and services (41.4%).

The company is working with its shipping vendors to understand their emissions and identify the most sustainable options. Clairo also significantly reduced the weight of its packaging materials, reducing GHG emissions by around 50%.

Details were released in its second annual Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report. Highlights include significant advancements in Clario's sustainability, ethical practices, and responsible governance commitments, including gender balance within its leadership by 2025 and net-zero emissions by 2045.

"Building upon the momentum from 2021, we are proud to publish Clario's second annual ESG report highlighting the substantial progress made towards our targets," said Chris Fikry, M.D., Chief Executive Officer at Clario, in a statement. "We continue to hold ourselves accountable for sustainability in our industry. By fostering a culture of workplace diversity, continuing the path toward net-zero emissions, and advancing health equity through access, innovation and expertise, we believe we are doing the right thing and setting a benchmark in our industry for others to aspire to."
