Mickey goes green with Disney solar installation
As part of environmental sustainability efforts, the Reedy Creek Improvement District has installed a 5-MW solar field at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
A subsidiary of Duke Energy built the 11.5-acre plant that features 48,000 solar panels constructed in the iconic shape of Mickey Mouse. The Reedy Creek Improvement District manages the Walt Disney World Resort.
The solar installation is located off World Drive near the Epcot Center entrance ramp. Guests can see the panels from the road, but the ground-level view doesn't allow them to see any "cute mouse ears," according Orlando Weekly recently reported.
The deal is underpinned by a 15-year power purchase agreement between Reedy Creek and Duke Energy Florida Solar Solutions LLC, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Florida. The 5-MW facility is reportedly the largest solar-power project at Disney World.
