ACEEE unveils state rankings for energy efficiency

California and Massachusetts tied for the top spot in the 10th edition of the 2016 State Energy Efficiency Scorecard published by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

The new rankings of U.S. state by their energy efficiency policy and program efforts marks Massachusetts' sixth consecutive year in first place, but the first time it shared the spotlight with California, which last held the title in 2010, the nonprofit organization said in a Sept. 27 news release announcing the release of the 2016 scorecard.

The two leaders were followed in the rankings by Rhode Island at number three, Connecticut and New York tied for fifth place, and Oregon, Washington, Maryland and Minnesota at seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively, according to the ACEEE's report.

Three states that showed the most improvement in energy efficiency efforts in 2016 were Missouri, Maine and Michigan, while the ACEEE scorecard identified the following states as most in need of improvement: Louisiana; Kansas; South Dakota; Wyoming; and North Dakota.

"Governors, legislators, regulators, businesses and citizens are increasingly recognizing that energy efficiency is a critical state resource that keeps money in the local economy," ACEEE Executive Director Steven Nadel said in a statement. "ACEEE The past year has been an exciting time for energy efficiency, with several states strengthening efficiency policies and programs. States are spurring efficiency investment through advancements in building energy codes, transportation planning, and leading by example in their own facilities and fleets. These investments reap large benefits, giving businesses, governments, and consumers more control over how and when they use energy."
