California amusement park joins green power program
A California amusement park has joined a number of other large energy users in Santa Clara in taking advantage of a renewable energy program offered by the municipal, not-for-profit utility Silicon Valley Power.
California's Great America, a 100-acre amusement park, expects to cover 100% of its electricity use through the utility's Santa Clara Green Power program, which allows residents, businesses and other large energy users to purchase solar and wind energy. Great America's purchase is for 12,810 MWh of clean energy annually, according to an April 21 news release, and is expected to reduce the amusement park's carbon footprint by more than 7 million pounds of CO2 per year.
“California’s Great America is proud to partner with Silicon Valley Power and is committed to doing its part to better the environment," California's Great America Vice President and general manager Raul Rehnborg said in a statement. "It is important for us to reduce our carbon footprint and join the growing number of local businesses that embrace the importance of renewable energy.”
Great America joins an increasing list of large energy users in Santa Clara that support renewable energy, including the city of Santa Clara, Intel Corp., Applied Materials and Santa Clara University. In addition, more than 70 small businesses and 4,000 households have committed to purchasing 100% renewable energy through Santa Clara Green Power, according to the utility.
California's Great America is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, a publicly traded partnership.
