EV charging helps property earn LEED Platinum

The Watt Companies on May 24 announced that its Watt Plaza property in California has achieved LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for the second time.

The real estate operating and investment company said the property bested its previous Platinum LEED certification by five points thanks to ongoing sustainability commitments from vendors serving the building, according to the announcement.

Initiatives that helped the property achieve the certification included realizing a reduction of more 31% in conventional transportation trips through an alternative commuting transportation program and its installation of electric vehicle charging stations in the parking facility. Additionally, the installation of a white roof on the property reduced its "heat island effect," the company said.

Addressing energy efficiency, the building in 2016 completed a retro commissioning of all equipment and systems that allowed the engineering team to evaluate energy usage by system; develop cost savings calculations on potential projects; and test the performance of all building equipment. The process included upgrades to LED fixtures, improvements to building's automation system operating parameters and general renovations to improve both occupant comfort and energy conservation, the company said.

"We are thrilled that Watt Plaza has earned LEED Platinum certification once again, which is especially noteworthy because our building has been operational for over 30 years," Watt Companies President Nadine Watt said. "Sustainability is a top priority for us, and we're proud to serve as an example of how a large commercial development can achieve the highest level of sustainability without sacrificing a high-quality experience to tenants. Our sustainability initiatives have been multi-faceted and we're constantly seeking new ways to remain a leader in green development."
