IKEA's US rooftop solar ownership will top 42 MW

As IKEA continues its buildout of rooftop solar projects atop its ever-expanding number of stores in the U.S., the home furnishings retailer said June 6 that its total ownership will exceed 42 MW by early fall. 

That's when the Swedish company expects to complete the installation of a 1.89 MW system at its new Jacksonville, Fla., store. 

Panel installation will begin this summer, with completion expected in early Fall for what will be the fifth IKEA solar array in the State of Florida. The project will represent the IKEA's 49th U.S. solar project, contributing to the presence of solar at nearly 90% of its stores nationwide. 

"We are excited about furthering our sustainability commitment and contributing to a low-carbon society with solar atop our future Jacksonville store," IKEA U.S. president Lars Petersson said in a June 5 statement. "We have a mission to create a better everyday life for the many, and IKEA Jacksonville can add to this goal and keep us Florida's largest nonutility private solar owner."

IKEA owns and operates each of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings as opposed to a solar lease or power purchase agreement, and globally has allocated $2.5 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2020. Consistent with the goal of being energy independent by 2020, IKEA has installed more than 700,000 solar panels on buildings across the world and owns approximately 300 wind turbines, including 104 in the U.S.
