Carestream, a manufacturer of dental and medical imaging systems, has been recognized with a Colorado Industrial Energy Efficiency award for its manufacturing plant in Windsor, Colo.

Carestream Health’s energy efficiency efforts resulted in an energy consumption reduction of 5.4% at the facility over the past two years and reducing energy use throughout the company by 21% during the past five years, according to an Aug. 2 news release. The award for its accomplishments came from the Colorado Energy Office.

“We continuously examine our manufacturing processes and product components to identify areas where we can help preserve the environment,” Cavan Kelsey, Carestream’s corporate environmental health and safety & sustainability director, said in a statement. “Our aim is to reduce energy use by increasing the efficiency of our operations even when we are adding additional equipment to achieve production goals.”

Carestream has been a member of Colorado’s “Industrial Energy Challenge” since 2011. Its goal is to reduce energy use another 5% from 2015 to 2020.

Over the past two years, Carestream’s Windsor plant saw energy savings of 5,119 MWh through the rebuilding of its steam turbine chiller to reduce electricity consumption and the installation of variable frequency drives on four cooling tower fan motors, eight cooling tower supply pumps and three chilled water pumps to ensure the optimization of the energy used for manufacturing operations.

The manufacturing plant hopes to continue its success in reducing its energy use through the training of a new certified energy manager to “more effectively analyze and prioritize opportunities for energy savings.”

Carestream is also updating its environmental management system to meet the new standards of goals for sustainable resource use and climate change mitigation.
