Vans HQ achieves LEED Platinum rating

Vans corporate headquarters has received LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s, the highest standard for sustainable buildings in the world.

According to a report in Solar Power World Online, the new headquarters, located in Costa Mesa, California, features a 1-MW carport solar array and more than 4,000 solar panels. This supplies about 50% of the building’s energy needs and prevents 440 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. The building incorporates cutting-edge lighting, heating, and cooling technologies as well as state-of-the-art fixtures, which combine to make the building 48% more energy efficient and 40% more water efficient than required by California’s building codes.

Vans headquarters also features 38 EV charging stations powered by the solar array, which employees can use for free, as well as a recycling and composting program with the goal of becoming a zero-waste facility.

The building achieved platinum status on the LEED scorecard with a total of 88 out of 110 points, including 33 of 35 for energy and atmosphere criteria and 5 out of 6 on innovation.
