GM unveils 100MW wind project in Ohio

The Northwest Ohio Wind Farm was unveiled by General Motors and Starwood Energy Group on Apr. 30 in Paulding County, Ohio. Power purchased from the 100-megawatt wind project, currently under construction, will help offset the power used at GM’s Ohio and Indiana manufacturing facilities with renewable energy. Construction is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2018

In a statement from GM, Rob Threlkeld, global manager of renewable energy, said, "The Northwest Ohio Wind Farm is an important step toward achieving our sustainability commitments, and we thank Starwood Energy Group and the Paulding County community for helping make this project possible." He added, “As we realize our vision for a zero-emissions future, renewable energy will help us to efficiently build vehicles while providing a greener grid to power them."

GM will purchase a total of 200 megawatts of wind energy from the Northwest Ohio Wind farm and from a wind farm in Illinois. When both farms come on line later this year, GM will be 20% of the way to its goal of generating or sourcing all electrical power for its facilities globally with 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.

The statement noted that wind industry growth has slowed in Ohio with a change to the property setback law requirements for new wind projects in 2014. The Northwest Ohio Wind Farm was grandfathered in under the old rules.
