Amazon UK implements solar, battery storage projects

Amazon is continuing its 100% renewable energy goal by installing large-scale rooftop solar panels on 10 of its UK fulfillment centers alongside rolling out a battery storage installation, the company announced on Oct. 16.

The solar installation will include a capacity of 20-MW and the mega-retailer expects the project to generate the equivalent of the electricity needed to power over 4,500 UK homes. The project is expected to reduce Amazon's carbon footprint by 6,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The project will be developed and funded by Macquarie Principal Finance, according to a press release.

Amazon also announced a deal it signed to power 100% of its UK buildings with renewable energy through the purchase of Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates (REGOs).

"As our fulfillment network continues to expand, we want to help generate more renewable energy at both existing and new facilities around the world in partnership with community and business leaders," Stefano Perego, operations director for Amazon UK, said in a statement. "We are putting our scale and inventive culture to work on sustainability, which is good for the environment, our business, our customers, and the communities in which we operate. By diversifying our energy portfolio, we can keep business costs low and pass along further savings to customers."

Additionally, Amazon UK's fulfillment centers will be used as sites for battery system installations, allowing the company to participate in energy demand management, frequency control and load management programs in coordination with local distribution network operations and the National Grid, the company announced.
