The RealReal commits to 2021 carbon neutrality
The RealReal, an online marketplace for consigned luxury goods, committed Nov. 20 to be carbon neutral by 2021 in response to a call to action by sustainability leaders within the fashion industry.
The retailer made the announcement following the CEO Carbon Neutral Challenge issued by Gucci president and CEO Marco Bizzarri, calling companies to accelerate their greenhouse gas emission plans. Before announcing this more ambitious goal, the RealReal had earlier this year joined the UN Climate Change's Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action (UNFCCC) and committed to reducing emissions by 30% by 2030.
“Marco Bizzarri’s challenge to execute more radical and immediate change inspired us to respond with greater urgency and turn up the dial on the commitment we made with UNFCCC,” Julie Wainwright, CEO of The RealReal, said in a statement. “Between the conversations had at this year’s Copenhagen Fashion Summit to the important work of activists like Greta Thunberg, it’s clear that we must do more and do it faster.”
The RealReal has signed with sustainability consultancy Shift Advantage to evaluate their emissions data across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and identity a path toward expedited reduction.
