Calif. town mayor plans hydrogen energy overhaul

Mayor R. Rex Parris of Lancaster, Calif., announced in a City Council meeting recently that he plans to transfer the city to a clean hydrogen-based economy, including in fuel energy and integrating hydrogen into the power grid.

This announcement follows the City of Lancaster’s achievement of their 2010 goal to become net-zero, which they reached last year. In particular, the city has become a big producer of solar energy, but other renewable energy is produced in the area as well.

"Hydrogen is becoming the go-to green fuel for power generation, energy storage, fuel cell cars, and anything natural gas has been used for. It is similar to natural gas—without the CO2. Fortunately for us, Lancaster has a plethora of renewable energy," Mayor Parris said in the meeting. "I encourage the world to join me as Lancaster embarks on a brave new path."

Moving forward, the mayor intends to work with the city to further integrate other green fuel sources, like hydrogen, into Lancaster’s green energy portfolio. Mayor Parris emphasized the growing market for hydrogen-fueled cars gaining popularity with major automakers.
